meandering stream, life directionHomeopathy was developed in the late 18th century by the German doctor, Samuel Hahnemann. It is based on the principle of similia similibus curentur, or like cures like, which states that any substance that causes the symptoms of a disease in healthy people can heal similar symptoms in sick people. Hahnemann called this medical system of curing the sick ‘homeopathy’ from the Greek words homoios – meaning similar, and pathos – meaning suffering or disease.

The origins of homeopathy date back to the time of Hippocrates (around 400 BC) who was the first practitioner who began treating ailments by using minute doses of natural substances which in larger amounts produce symptoms of the ailment. In the 16th century the pioneer of pharmacology Paracelsus also used this system of medicine,  declaring that the small doses of “what makes a man ill also cures him”.

Homeopathy stimulates the body’s own healing power to complete the curative process. The human organism has the dynamic and powerful capacity to protect and heal itself. However, sometimes due to an imbalance in the organism this dynamic force is not strong enough to complete the healing process. This is why we use homoeopathic remedies, which act as catalysts that stimulate our natural defences.

Homoeopathic remedies are made from very minute amounts of the active substance of plant, mineral or animal origin. The process of dilution and succussion is used to develop the healing properties of these substances. The remedies are diluted so many times that generally no chemical trace of the original substance remains, so they cannot cause any side effects.

Homeopathy is holistic medicine: it treats the whole person, not just symptoms of disease. A remedy is prescribed not only for the symptoms of the disease but for the patient’s whole state. Individual characteristics (mental, emotional and physical) are all taken into account as well as medical and family history. Every homoeopathic prescription is individual, which means that two people with a similar condition may be treated with a different remedy. They both might suffer from similar symptoms, but the way they experience their symptoms, their energy level and the way they express and cope with the illness can be quite different. In contrast to orthodox medicine, which is concerned with the symptoms of the disease (and how to remove them), homeopathy is concern about the ‘whole’ person and is truly individualistic.

Homeopathy is based on ‘Law of Similars’ which states that any substance that can cause symptoms to appear in a healthy human being, can restore to health an ill individual showing similar symptoms. For example Belladonna, Deadly Nightshade, when taken in its natural crude form produces a very high fever, burning sore throat, thirst, heat and restlessness. When Belladonna is taken in its Homeopathic form it is curative for a person with similar symptoms who has an acute inflamed sore throat, burning high fever, is thirsty and restless.

Homeopathy can help a wide range of complaints, from various acute and chronic diseases to mental and emotional problems.

Acute complaints: colds, flu, fever, sinusitis, ear infections, headaches, sore-throats, coughs, bronchitis, acute intestinal conditions, food poisoning, diarrhoea, colic, vomiting, vertigo, difficult dentition, childhood illnesses (mumps, chicken pox, measles, whooping cough, etc), tooth abscesses, cystitis, sprains and strains, sunstroke, etc.

Chronic complaints: asthma, eczema, hay fever, ME, allergies, PMT, irregular periods, hormonal imbalances, menopausal problems, migraines, chronic constipation, IBS, fibroids, arthritis, etc.

Mental and Emotional problems: such as: insomnia, panic attacks, food disorders, chronic grief, depression, anxiety and phobias, etc.

Homeopathy is also very beneficial during pregnancy and labour, and is very effective in treating babies & children.

The response to a remedy is very individual. Sometimes the response could be quite intense or it may be more subtle and difficult to notice.

Different patients respond to a remedy in different ways. Some patients immediately feel better inside themselves or may feel that they have more energy. Other patients could briefly feel tired or their original symptoms may temporarily feel worse before they start feeling the improvement.

This reaction happens because the body has been stimulated into throwing out toxic materials. This can sometimes take the form of a discharge (e.g. runny nose, cold etc.). Sometimes you may notice that some old symptoms return briefly or you may notice a temporary release of emotional symptoms. These are all good indications that the process of self-healing has begun.

The return of old symptoms means that the body is dealing with the conditions that were not dealt with at the time or were previously suppressed. It is important not to suppress these symptoms as they are a normal part of self- healing. These are temporary and will usually quickly pass.

Each individual case is different and cure depends on what sort of illness you have, as well as the other individual characteristics of your case. Deep seated diseases, that have been around for years, do not disappear overnight and cure depends on how much there is to unravel. Your homeopath will discuss this with you before the treatment.
